Formula, derivation and worked example

This calculator adds up the main sources of household carbon emissions — grid electricity, cooking gas and vehicle fuel — and converts them into monthly and annual CO₂ figures. The emission factors are held in one place in the code, so the same numbers are used consistently everywhere. The breakdown matters more than the total: it shows which single change would cut the most emissions for your household, which is usually electricity in hot climates and vehicle fuel where commutes are long.

Electricity CO₂ = kWh × 0.71 kg/kWh
Petrol CO₂ = litres × 2.31 kg/L
Diesel CO₂ = litres × 2.68 kg/L
LPG CO₂ = kg × 2.98 kg/kg
Travel CO₂ = (distance ÷ mileage) × petrol factor [used only when litres are not entered]
Annual CO₂ = monthly total × 12

Substitution steps

  1. 1. Electricity
    250 kWh × 0.71
    = 177.5 kg
  2. 2. LPG
    14 kg × 2.98
    = 41.7 kg
  3. 3. Vehicle travel
    (800 ÷ 16) × 2.31
    = 115.5 kg
  4. 4. Annual total
    monthly × 12
    = 4,017 kg

Understanding the result

Read the main result together with supporting checks, assumptions, limits and intermediate values.

For a manual check, repeat the first equation, confirm the units and change one input at a time.

Assumptions and calculation scope

  • Monthly electricity use is assumed to be entered in kWh; converting from another unit before entry avoids changing the numerical meaning of the calculation.
  • Household Carbon Footprint Calculator applies the displayed Electricity CO₂ = kWh × 0.71 kg/kWh relationship to the entered environment & energy inputs. Factors that are not exposed as inputs or stated assumptions are outside this calculator's calculation scope.

Common mistakes when using Household Carbon Footprint Calculator

  • Do not mix units for Monthly electricity use (kWh), Monthly LPG use (kg), Petrol purchased monthly (litres). A unit mismatch changes the input magnitude even when the typed number looks reasonable.
  • Do not replace the displayed Electricity CO₂ = kWh × 0.71 kg/kWh relationship with a different convention without also changing the underlying assumptions; compare like-for-like methods when checking the result.
  • Do not treat Annual CO₂ emissions = 4,017 kg CO₂e from the worked example as a universal answer. It belongs to the displayed example inputs and must be recalculated for the actual case.

When the Household Carbon Footprint Calculator is useful

Household Carbon Footprint Calculator is designed for cases where Monthly electricity use, Monthly LPG use, Petrol purchased monthly, Diesel purchased monthly are known and you need Annual CO₂ emissions, Monthly CO₂ emissions, Electricity (monthly). The page keeps the live calculator, calculation method and worked example together so the result can be checked instead of treated as a black-box number.

Use the calculator for the scope described by its inputs and notes. The displayed method is Electricity CO₂ = kWh × 0.71 kg/kWh. If the real project or decision needs factors that are not represented here, treat the result as an estimate and add the missing checks separately.

Monthly electricity use and Monthly LPG use: what changes the answer

The worked example uses Monthly electricity use = 250 kWh, Monthly LPG use = 14 kg, Petrol purchased monthly = 0 litres, Diesel purchased monthly = 0 litres. With those values, Annual CO₂ emissions is 4,017 kg CO₂e. Changing an input should be interpreted according to that field's unit, range, option and hint rather than by the number alone.

For this calculator, the main input roles are: Monthly electricity use (kWh): Units billed on your last electricity bill. Monthly LPG use (kg): A standard domestic cylinder is about 14.2 kg. Enter 0 if you do not use LPG. Petrol purchased monthly (litres): Leave 0 if you would rather enter distance and mileage below. Diesel purchased monthly (litres): Optional input; leave the supplied default only when it matches your case.

How to sanity-check a Household Carbon Footprint Calculator result

Start by confirming the entered values and units, then compare the substituted working with the displayed formula or calculation steps. Pay particular attention to Annual CO₂ emissions, because it is the first worked-example output shown by the live engine.

Finally, compare the result with the assumptions, warnings and related calculators on this page. A nearby calculator can be useful as a cross-check when it measures the same workflow from a different input or output direction.

Formulas explained

CO₂ = Activity × Emission factor

Every carbon estimate works the same way: multiply how much of something you used by an emission factor that says how much CO₂ that unit releases. The accuracy of the answer depends almost entirely on the factor.

Activity
kWh of electricity, litres of fuel or kg of LPG per month
Emission factor
kg CO₂e released per unit of that activity

Factors used here: electricity 0.71 kg/kWh, petrol 2.31 kg/L, diesel 2.68 kg/L, LPG 2.98 kg/kg.

Where the factors come from

Grid electricity factors depend on the generation mix — coal-heavy grids are far higher than hydro or nuclear-heavy ones. Fuel factors are close to fixed because they follow the carbon content of the fuel itself.

Scope of this estimate

This covers direct household energy and vehicle fuel only. Food, goods, flights, water and public services are not included, so your full consumption footprint is larger.

Reading the result

Compare the breakdown, not the total, against other households. The category with the largest share is where a change in behaviour or equipment gives the biggest reduction.

Worked example

  1. 1250 kWh electricity, 14 kg LPG, 800 km driven at 16 km/L.
  2. 2Electricity = 250 × 0.71 = 177.5 kg CO₂/month
  3. 3LPG = 14 × 2.98 = 41.7 kg CO₂/month
  4. 4Travel = (800 ÷ 16) × 2.31 = 115.5 kg CO₂/month
  5. 5Total ≈ 334.7 kg/month ≈ 4,017 kg (about 4.0 tonnes) per year

Frequently asked questions

How much CO₂ does 1 kWh of electricity produce?

This calculator uses 0.71 kg CO₂ per kWh, a typical figure for a coal-heavy grid. Grids with more renewables, hydro or nuclear can be well under half of that.

How much CO₂ does a litre of petrol produce?

About 2.31 kg of CO₂ per litre burnt, and about 2.68 kg per litre for diesel, because diesel is denser and contains more carbon per litre.

Is a rooftop solar system counted?

Only indirectly. Enter the net units you actually import from the grid on your bill, and self-consumed solar generation is excluded automatically.

Does this include flights and food?

No. It covers household energy and vehicle fuel. Flights, diet, goods and services would need a full consumption-based footprint tool.

What is a typical household footprint?

It varies enormously by country and lifestyle, from around 1 tonne per person per year in low-income settings to over 15 tonnes in high-consumption ones. Use the trend in your own number rather than a benchmark.

What inputs does the Household Carbon Footprint Calculator use?

It uses Monthly electricity use, Monthly LPG use, Petrol purchased monthly, Diesel purchased monthly, Monthly vehicle distance, and Vehicle fuel efficiency. Follow the unit printed for each field and choose any selectable option to match the real scenario.

What does the Household Carbon Footprint Calculator calculate?

It calculates Annual CO₂ emissions, Monthly CO₂ emissions, Electricity (monthly), LPG / cooking gas (monthly), Vehicle travel (monthly), and Largest source. With the displayed default inputs, Annual CO₂ emissions is 4,017 kg CO₂e.

Which formula does the Household Carbon Footprint Calculator use?

The primary relationship is Electricity CO₂ = kWh × 0.71 kg/kWh. The page also shows substituted values and calculation steps so the result can be checked independently.
