How resistor colour codes work

4-band resistor

Band 1 and Band 2 are significant digits, Band 3 is the multiplier and Band 4 is tolerance. Example: Brown–Black–Red–Gold = 10 × 100 = 1,000 Ω ±5%.

5-band resistor

The first three bands are significant digits, the fourth band is the multiplier and the fifth band is tolerance. This supports finer resistor values commonly used in precision circuits.
