Using D²/162.28, an 8 mm TMT rod weighs 0.394 kg per metre. A standard 12 m bar therefore weighs about 4.73 kg, and one metric tonne contains about 211 full 12 m bars before rolling tolerance.

For a bar bending schedule, calculate the centre-line cutting length of each bar rather than using the stock length. Add laps, hooks, bends and approved wastage separately.

For mild-steel plate with width and length in metres and thickness in millimetres, weight in kilograms is width × length × thickness × 7.85. A 1 m × 1 m × 8 mm MS plate is therefore 62.8 kg.

From net weight to order quantity

Net calculated mass excludes cutting loss, laps, off-cuts and rolling tolerance. The order allowance field adds a transparent percentage without changing the engineering net quantity.

For fabricated structures, prepare a member-wise bill of materials and separate fasteners, cleats, base plates, galvanizing and weld metal instead of hiding them inside a large wastage factor.

MS plate weight chart: kg per square metre

For mild-steel plate, the quickest site formula is weight (kg) = width (m) × length (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. Therefore the weight per square metre is simply thickness × 7.85. A 6 mm MS plate is about 47.1 kg/m², an 8 mm plate is 62.8 kg/m² and a 10 mm plate is 78.5 kg/m².

Use the calculator above when the plate is not exactly one square metre, when there are several pieces, or when a cutting allowance and material rate must be included. For procurement and lifting, confirm the supplier or mill certificate because rolling tolerance, coating and fabrication additions can change actual mass.

MS pipe weight chart and pipe weight formula

Round MS pipe weight is calculated from the steel area in the pipe wall: area = π/4 × (OD² − ID²), where ID = OD − 2 × wall thickness. Multiplying that area by 7,850 kg/m³ gives kilograms per metre. This is more reliable than using nominal pipe names alone because two pipes with the same nominal bore can have different outside diameters or wall thicknesses.

The quick-reference rows below use nominal outside diameter and wall thickness only as worked planning examples. For ERW, GI, seamless or schedule pipe procurement, use the actual OD and thickness from the manufacturer table or purchase specification.

MS square tube and rectangular hollow-section weight

For a square or rectangular hollow section, subtract the inner hollow area from the outer rectangle and multiply by steel density and length. A simple sharp-corner calculation is useful for estimating, while manufacturer catalogue mass is preferred for final purchase because real hollow sections include corner radii and manufacturing tolerances.

TMT bar weight chart for estimation and BBS checks

For reinforcement steel at 7,850 kg/m³, the familiar Indian rule is kg/m ≈ D²/162.28, with D in millimetres. This gives about 0.394 kg/m for 8 mm bar, 0.616 kg/m for 10 mm, 0.887 kg/m for 12 mm, 1.578 kg/m for 16 mm and 2.465 kg/m for 20 mm.

MS plate quick rule

For 1 m² of mild-steel plate, weight in kg is thickness in mm × 7.85. Examples: 5 mm = 39.25 kg/m², 8 mm = 62.8 kg/m² and 12 mm = 94.2 kg/m².

MS pipe needs OD and wall thickness

Nominal bore alone is not enough for an accurate pipe weight. Use the actual outside diameter and wall thickness because schedule and manufacturing series can change both dimensions.

Square tube catalogue mass can differ

A sharp-corner hollow-section formula is a good estimate, but rolled corner radii and tolerances mean final procurement should use the manufacturer mass-per-metre table.
