BMI is fast, free and needs no equipment — which is exactly why it is everywhere. It is also blind to what your weight is actually made of. Two people with an identical BMI of 27 can have wildly different amounts of fat, muscle and abdominal tissue.

Why BMI and Body Fat Disagree
BMI treats every kilogram the same. Muscle is roughly 18 percent denser than fat, so a kilogram of muscle occupies less space but weighs the same on the scale.
Consider two men, both 1.80 m and 88 kg. Both have a BMI of 27.2.
Person A — trains with weights four times a week, 14 percent body fat.
Person B — sedentary, 32 percent body fat.
The BMI is identical. The fat mass differs by nearly 16 kg. This is the single clearest reason BMI is a screening tool rather than an assessment.

Women carry more essential fat for physiological reasons, so male and female figures are never directly comparable.
How Body Fat Is Estimated
Skinfold calipers. Pinch measurements at three or seven sites feed a regression equation such as Jackson–Pollock. Cheap and repeatable if the same person takes the measurement, but technique-sensitive.
Bioelectrical impedance (BIA). Smart scales pass a small current through the body and infer fat from resistance. Readings shift with hydration, food and time of day — measure at the same time each morning if you use one.
Circumference formulas. The US Navy method uses neck, waist and height (plus hips for women). No special equipment, moderate accuracy. This is the approach behind most online estimators, including the Body Fat Calculator.
DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, air displacement. Reference methods used in clinics and research. Accurate, expensive, not something you repeat weekly.
Every consumer method carries an error band of several percentage points. Track the trend across weeks rather than trusting a single reading.
Waist-to-Height Ratio: The Underrated Measure
Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) needs only a tape measure and captures something BMI misses entirely — where the fat sits.

The rule of thumb behind it — keep your waist under half your height — is easy to remember and applies across a wide range of heights and both sexes. Measure at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, at the end of a normal breath out, with the tape snug but not compressing the skin.
Waist-to-Hip Ratio
Higher ratios indicate an apple-shaped distribution, which is more strongly associated with metabolic risk than a pear-shaped distribution at the same BMI. WHR needs two careful measurements, so WHtR is usually the more reliable home measure.
Combining the Measures
No single number decides anything. A practical reading combines three:

Which Measure Should You Track?
- For a quick screen: BMI. Two measurements, no equipment.
- For health risk: waist-to-height ratio. Better proxy for abdominal fat than BMI at similar effort.
- For training progress: body fat percentage and lean mass. Weight can stay flat while composition improves substantially.
- For long-term trend: all three, monthly, measured the same way each time.
Consistency of method matters more than the absolute accuracy of any one reading.
Common Mistakes
- Comparing a caliper reading to a BIA reading and treating the difference as a real change.
- Measuring the waist at the navel on one occasion and at the natural waist on another.
- Reading male body fat ranges against a woman's result.
- Assuming a BMI drop always means fat loss — during aggressive dieting some of it is lean mass.
- Using body fat percentage as a diagnosis. It is not one.
Important Limitations
These measures are educational screening tools. They do not diagnose any condition, and they cannot replace clinical assessment, blood work or imaging. Pregnancy, growth in children and adolescents, significant oedema, and conditions affecting muscle mass all change how the numbers should be read.
