A compound wall is priced by its face area. Take the plot perimeter, subtract the gate, multiply by the height. A 9-inch brick wall needs about 55 bricks per square foot of face area (half that for a 4.5-inch wall), plus mortar and a plinth footing which is included in the rate.

Tips

  • Add piers every 3 m for a 4.5-inch wall — it will not stand wind loads otherwise.
  • Include a damp-proof course at plinth level to stop rising damp staining the wall.

Are foundations included?

The per-sq-ft rate normally covers a nominal footing. Deep or reinforced footings on soft soil cost extra.
