Income Tax Calculator
Old vs new regime side by side for FY 2025-26 with standard deduction, 80C/80D, rebate and cess.
Inputs
PPF, ELSS, EPF, life insurance — max ₹1,50,000
Formula
- New regime: Taxable = Gross − ₹75,000 standard deduction
- Old regime: Taxable = Gross − ₹50,000 − 80C − 80D − 80CCD(1B) − HRA
- Tax = Σ (slab band × slab rate)
- Rebate u/s 87A: new ₹60,000 up to ₹12,00,000 · old ₹12,500 up to ₹5,00,000
- Total payable = (Tax − rebate) × 1.04 (4% health & education cess)
India runs two parallel personal tax systems. The new regime (default since FY 2023-24) has wider, lower slabs but disallows almost every deduction except the ₹75,000 standard deduction and employer NPS. The old regime keeps 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan interest but taxes at steeper rates from ₹5 lakh. This calculator computes both and reports which one costs less for your exact deduction profile — the crossover usually sits near ₹3.75–4 lakh of total deductions.
Step-by-step calculation
- 1
New regime taxable income
1,500,000 − 75,000
₹1,425,000
- 2
New regime slab tax
400,000 @ 5% = 20,000 + 400,000 @ 10% = 40,000 + 225,000 @ 15% = 33,750
₹93,750

Old regime slab tax
250,000 @ 5% = 12,500 + 500,000 @ 20% = 100,000 + 275,000 @ 30% = 82,500

₹3,750
Assumptions
- Slabs are FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27).
- Surcharge on income above ₹50 lakh is not applied.
- Senior-citizen basic exemption applies only in the old regime (₹3 lakh / ₹5 lakh).
- Salaried standard deduction: ₹75,000 new regime, ₹50,000 old regime.
Tips
- If your deductions exceed roughly ₹4,00,000, the old regime usually wins — check the comparison below.
- 80CCD(1B) gives an extra ₹50,000 on top of 80C, but only under the old regime.
- The regime can be switched each year by salaried taxpayers.
Warnings
- This is a planning estimate. Capital gains, surcharge, relief u/s 89 and business income need a full computation.
- Verify the current year's slabs before filing — they change with each Finance Act.
