What is seed rate?
Seed rate is the quantity of seed required to sow a specified area, commonly expressed as kg/ha or kg/acre. The correct rate depends on crop, variety, target population, seed size, germination, purity, planting method and expected field establishment.
Why can't seed rate be calculated from area alone?
Area tells you how much land is being planted, but it does not tell you how many plants are required or how many viable seeds are present in each kilogram. Population, seed quality and TSW are therefore important inputs.
How does germination affect seed rate?
