Calculate how many paver blocks are needed for a driveway, parking area or pathway, with wastage and cost.

- Area = length × width
- Paver area = paver length × paver width
- Blocks = area ÷ paver area × (1 + wastage)
Paver blocks are sold by the square metre or by the piece. Divide the area to be paved by the plan area of one block and add about 5% for cutting at edges. Under the pavers you also need a 40–50 mm sand bed, which the result shows.

Worked example
- 1A driveway 20 ft × 12 ft = 240 sq ft = 22.3 m².
- 2Zigzag pavers of 225 × 112 mm cover 0.0252 m² each → 885 blocks.
- 3With 5% cutting waste, order about 930 blocks.
Tips
- Use 60 mm thick pavers for footpaths and 80 mm for car parking and driveways.
- Compact the base well — most paver failures are caused by a weak sub-base, not by the blocks.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers in one square metre?
For 225 × 112 mm blocks about 40 per m²; for 200 × 200 mm blocks 25 per m².
What thickness should I choose?
60 mm for pedestrian areas, 80 mm for cars and light vehicles, 100 mm for heavy trucks.
How much sand is needed below?
A 40–50 mm bedding sand layer — roughly 0.05 m³ per square metre.
